Second Stage of Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai Project Completed
On August 2, Shanghai enterprises and institutions environmental information platform showed the details of a construction project in which part C of the second stage of Tesla’s Gigafactory Shanghai Project (Phase I) was completed on June 30 this year, and commissioning began on July 22. So far, the entire second stage of the Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai Project (Phase I) has been completed and has now been put into production.
The C part of the second stage of Tesla’s Gigafactory Shanghai Project (Phase I) is the research and development center. The company previously mentioned that the research and development center has a total of 28 laboratories. At present, it focuses on the development of Tesla software and hardware, processes and technologies in China, undertakes application adaptation and standard testing in the Chinese market, and participates in the research and development of AI machine learning in the world.
When the second stage of the production line optimization project was announced in November last year, Tesla revealed in its EIA report that the second stage of the Gigafactory Shanghai (Phase I) will be re-divided into A, B and C from the original two parts, of which Part A is to improve the production capacity of a certain model production area. Part B will focus on the production of new models and related derivative models in the new model production area. Part C will build a research and development center and carry out vehicle production tests such as environmental testing.
The construction of the second stage of Tesla’s Gigafactory Shanghai Project (Phase I) began on January 30, 2021. The construction content is to increase the production capacity of Model 3’s in the first stage (Phase I), add the complete vehicle production lines of Model Y, Model 3 and related derivative models, and cover the “New Model Advance Start Project” while adding research and development centers. However, in November last year, Tesla revealed in its EIA report that the construction of a “New Model Advance Start Project” had been cancelled.

According to documents Telsa recently submitted to the the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Tesla revenue in China reached $8.437 billion in the first half of this year, an increase of 42.95% year-on-year. However, due to the suspension of its Gigafactory Shanghai in the second quarter, Tesla Q2 delivery decreased by 18% month-on-month, and its revenue in China also decreased by 18.56% month-on-month. Tesla’s financial report in the second quarter of this year shows that the annual production capacity of the Gigafactory Shanghai has exceeded 750,000 vehicles, and will continue to expand its production capacity.
According to the China Passenger Car Association, Tesla China delivered a total of 78,900 vehicles in June, hitting a record high. In the first half of this year, Tesla China delivered 295,000 vehicles.
