Alibaba CEO Daniel Zhang Steps Down as Legal Representative of Taobao and Tmall
According to Chinese enterprise information inquiry platform Qichacha, Zhejiang Tmall Technology Co., Ltd. and Taobao (China) Software Co., Ltd. have recently made changes to their registration with China’s Industrial and Commercial Administration. Daniel Zhang, CEO and Chairman of Alibaba Group Holding Limited, has stepped down as Chairman and General Manager of the above two companies, replaced by Trudy Dai. The platform also shows that there are currently 16 companies under Zhang’s name, six of which he holds the position of legal representative.
Zhejiang Tmall Technology Co., Ltd. was established in 2010 with a registered capital of $114 million. The company’s main brand is Tmall Genie, an AI smart product brand launched by Alibaba Group Holding Limited AI Labs on July 5, 2017.
Daniel Zhang joined Alibaba Group in August 2007 as the CFO of Taobao, and participated in designing Taobao’s business model to help the company achieve profitability at the end of 2009.
After Tmall became an independent business in 2011, Zhang became its president. The venture is now one of the largest B2C platforms in the world. After his founding of the “Double Eleven Shopping Festival,” Daniel Zhang has made it the largest online shopping festival in the world.

Since September 2013, Daniel Zhang has served as the COO of Alibaba Group, has been fully responsible for the business operations of Alibaba in China and abroad, led the company‘s successful mobile transformation, established a global logistics platform Cainiao Smart Logistics Network Limited, and launched Tmall Global, a platform for Chinese consumers to purchase global branded goods.
In addition, according to another Chinese commercial information inquiry platform Tianyancha, Jiang Fan, the former CEO of Tmall, no longer serves as the legal representative, chairman, and general manager of Zhejiang Taobao Network Co., Ltd. and Zhejiang Tmall Network Co., Ltd. Meanwhile, he no longer serves as the legal representative and chairman of Alibaba Group Holding Limited Xunxi (Hangzhou) Digital Technology Co., Ltd.
