OnePlus Smartphones to Feature 120Hz Refresh Rate
At last week’s CES in Las Vegas, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau confirmed to The Verge that the company’s next flagship devices will feature a display with a 120Hz refresh rate, raising the bar from the 90Hz industry standard set by the OnePlus 7 series.
OnePlus worked with Samsung to develop the OLED screens. The phone-maker has made improvements to gestures native to the OnePlus operating systems, allowing the newly touted 120Hz refresh rate to provide the ‘burdenless’ experience OnePlus users desire.
OnePlus will also use MEMC (motion estimation/motion compensation) technology to smooth video playback on the new displays. The next-gen displays will also feature 1000 nits peak brightness for HDR content, a touch sampling rate of 240Hz, and 10-bit color. The company’s emphasis on display technology really underscores the competitive nature of screen specs among Android devices.

OnePlus is not the first to create a device with a 120Hz refresh rate. ROG released a 120Hz device in 2019, while Samsung is expected to release a phone with a 120Hz display early this year. The most pressing concern regarding the increased refresh rate is balancing performance with power consumption. As a result, there has been discussion of a refresh rate switching mechanism, allowing users to switch between 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz depending on the content and use case scenario.
